In fourth grade we're beginning all new units this month: in Social Studies we're learning about the exploration of California and the building of the Missions; Our Treasures unit is "Teamwork," and in science each class has the second of their three rotating topics, either Rocks and Minerals, Magnetism and Electricity, or Animal Ecosystems and Foodchains. ALL 4th graders are starting the California MIssions PowerPoint (research) project; Room 8 is working on a musical play entitled "The Incredible Westward Movement", to be performed for the entire school (and Rm. 8 parents) on the auditorium stage early April; Rm. 7 & Rm. 10 are going to MOCA tomorrow for their second field trip, as part of the CAS (Contemporary Art Start) program (Rm. 8 will have their 2nd trip to MOCA with Mrs. Horiuchi's class later on).
First Grade
This month, first graders will be working on group projects that focus on ways to make our community better.
Fifth Grade
The 5th graders are working on country reports. Students are submitting typed reports with food connections, PowerPoint presentations, boards with facts, music, costumes, maps, videos, artifacts and dance.
We are also working on Treasures Theme projects involving situations that might involve matters of life and death, scientific research, natural disasters, or getting a difficult job done. Students are presenting research media in the form of a play, PowerPoint , board with visuals. 8 Teams will be presenting orally to the class.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten Students have been learning all about community. We took and exciting field trip to the Los Feliz Branch Library where we checked out books, got new library cards, and had a special private tour. Thank you Librarian Rachel! We also ventured to the Los Feliz Firestation. An exciting visit for our young students. We will be starting our unit on Weather next.
4th Grade CST Writing Assessment
All 4th Graders will take the CST Writing Assessment on Tuesday, March 6th. The test will begin promptly at the start of the day.
Third Grade Team
On Saturday, February 25th, Ms. Ruz accompanied 12 of our 3rd grade students and their parents to the Central Library in downtown Los Angeles. It was a fun and exciting trip that was sponsored by our Councilmember Mr. Tom LaBonge. It was wonderful to see him and his wife. Our students and parents were welcomed by docents and had a tour of the beautiful library, followed by a puppet show, and time to check out books. Our gratitude is sent to the LaBonge's for their involvement and genorosity to our community. Rotations: 3rd graders will begin their enrichment rotations (along with all 3rd grade students) in which they will break into groups and participate in activities in the subjects of math, music, art and Shakespeare. The rotations are every Thursday for 1 hour and are led by Mrs. Hovsepian, Mrs. Horiuchi, Dr. Motzkus, and Mrs. Williams.

Donor's ChooseYou can support our teachers with a donation to Donor's Choose. Check out our school page here: NoteworthyA Gift From the Getty Museum to Franklin
This February, second grade students in Ms. Perez, Ms. Banks, and Mr. Hernandez’s classes had the incredible opportunity to be treated as VIP guests of the Getty Museum. Thanks to a grant that Mr. Hernandez applied for and was granted, Franklin students and parent chaperones were given the rare opportunity to work in small groups with museum instructors and participate in the “Artists as Storytellers” program in which students focused on select works of art and had conversations about art and how artists are able to tell a story through art. Students not only discussed what they saw in the art, but also were able to make their own art inspired by what they were observing. At school, second grade has been working on the theme of expression and creativity through art, movement, storytelling, and writing so the visit to the museum allowed for the students to make many connections to their learning. The outing was a fantastic opportunity for the students to learn while enjoying what the city has to offer.
This section is NOT a comprehensive list of events--please see the Calendar for a full listing of events and for more details. Please note that all events are held at school unless otherwise noted. |
